We Did It!! The rich world’s quiet revolution: women are gradually taking over the workplace

For grade on Oct 29, 2010. Why is the demand for female brains so great?? How are women to juggle the home and work? How are various governments creating new ways to help women in the workforce? What does this mean for you in your future occupation?

  1. Speaking as a third party observer and not from a female point of view, I think that the high demand for female workers is due to females being more tedious and detailed than men. Furthermore, females have a higher capacity to remember small details and are able to multi-task better than men. As for juggling home and work, I think that there should be a law passed allowing women to take time off from work to pick/drop their kid off at home or a day-care. Different types of governments are doing different things to help with women. For instance, Scandinavia provides many state- financed nurseries while Germany's schools close midday. As for my future, I believe that the increase of female workers will increase my chances of obtaining a job since I am a woman. However, it also increases more competition as more and more women are out looking for the same jobs.

  2. @asianaussie18---this is not my whole response, just a comment....which you will never read. About your proposed law. I mean, personally I lean towards social Darwinism. And that means trade ups. If she wants to have children and work, then she works to her agreed time--no special favors. Unless it was in her agreement with her employer to leave early. But she should not be compensated for this time. Again thats the employers choice or state/city govts, not mine and frankly not the Federal Government

  3. Demand for women has increased simply because women are much more meticulous workers then men. From a male perspective, men generally do not apply their concentration well enough to the task at hand, unlike women who do. Yet, women should not be given any special laws that assist them in managing their labor hours and other personal duties, because it would be unfair for other laborers, who wouldn't receive similar benefits. Although, this increase in the demand of female workers would greatly aid women, it would diminish my chances of obtaining a job.

  4. Frankly this article seems inherently socialist and altogether leaves an unsavory taste in my mouth. The idea that "real family values" are encompassed in dropping your infants and young children off at your local government child-care center and then when they become young adults you keep them in school for most of the day and the year under the watchful eye of 'big mother' seems to betray a deep love of feminazism.

One of the reasons why women to me are becoming more prominent in the workplace, is probably the fact that they are paid a lower wage and probably possess a college degree. As far as meticulousness, I can't believe it has anything to do with it. Japan having the 3rd largest economy in the world, losing its 2nd place against the powerhouse of China, seems just fine without catering to women. It betrays a certain ignorance of the writer, that believes that countries that spurn technology and are based on agriculture are behind in the world because they don't embrace women workers. "Correlation does not mean casuality."

  5. The demand for female brains is so great because it is a new fad, females representing large companies can show strength in them these days. As for juggling work and home, for all we know, high-up business women might put their children in day care centers, have baby sitters, or the husband may stay at home or work at home. It all depends on the person. As for my future occupation, me being a male, I'm screwed.

  6. The demand for female brains is increasing because the idiots who are heads of corporations finally realized that they could hire better workers and pay lower salaries. That, unfortunately, is not a good thing for women. The government or the corporations should not have to make any accommodations or give any favors toward female workers. If they can't balance their lives between home and work, they should just pick one and stick with it or if they choose both, then suck it up and deal with it and stop with the complaining. Several governments have been making changes to help women in the workforce. Germany ends school at noon and Scandinavia creates day-care centers for children. Since I'm a woman, this means that there are more competition for me if I choose to work but then I would probably marry a rich guy and live in luxury for the rest of my life.

  7. This article is a strong indicator that we are in the midst of serious social change. We are moving away from notions that women must stay home with children, finding that they are just as capable, in some cases more so, than men of being part of the work place. Demand for child care is on the rise, as is the number of fathers who choose to stay home with their children. Governments, mainly European, are trying to help these working women with things like required paid maturnity leave. Because the US is not moveing towards these regulations, my career will likely not be affected. I'll probably get the same degree, and work just as hard or harder, than a man, but earn a lesser salary. All this makes me ask, Josh, what's wrong with a bit of "feminazism?"

  8. There is a higher demand for female in the workplace now because they are more loyal, meticulous, and work harder nowadays. Also, female tend to provide a positive working environment for fellow employees. In my opinion, it is very hard for a woman to juggle home and work because the average person still carries the stereotype that women are supposed to manage the household. The government should pay more attention to women who have a family they have to care for and work because the government can lose many smart brains if they do not. This is because the family or home still comes before work in many women's minds. Many governments, for example Sweden and Germany, allow flexible working for mothers or women who have to take care of their family. This means that in the future, I will be able to find a job easier and that I can be able to manage my family and work at the same time without being less dedicated to either one.

  9. The demand for female workers is huge because there is a greater supply of educated females than males. On a more negative note, employers may prefer females because they can pay them less for the same amount of work done by males. Most women don't juggle home and work. The article says that many women leave their careers when they have children. Other women who do choose to juggle home and work have great difficulty doing that because there's "no time" for everything. The governments of different countries approach this issue with different strategies. Germany and Sweden promote flexible working which helps retain their female workers. The Scandinavian countries provide many state-financed nurseries. If the US implements these policies as well, then it will be much easier for me to balance work and family.

  10. As more women strive to secure a future without relying on a man, more are getting degrees and aiming towards higher paying jobs. Because women are so meticulous and loyal, employers prefer them to the slightly more expensive man. This high demand for women at work doesn't allow her to spend as much time at home. Women with this problem are forced to either choose between the two or lead extremely stressful lives trying to handle both. Since I am a women, I think I'll just have to make the choice between work and home before I decide to have any children.

  11. As the number of females graduating college increases over the male number the female brain in the work place is becoming more in demand. Companies can also save a few dollars by paying the women less than had a man been working the job. With governments implementing new programs to help with the load of juggling home and work, women should be able to have more time to balance the work and home. Perhaps "monkey see, monkey do" will apply in the future for the U.S. and the programs like those in Sweden will be adopted for the U.S. helping me balance a career and family.

  12. The female brain is in large demand in the work place because of the increasing amount of college graduates. Females also provide a difference outlook on typical problems. In order to juggle the home and work place women are having to rely on daycare and nannies more than before. It is even becoming more common to see the men of the family staying home with the children while the woman is the breadwinner of the family. Governments could alter the schedules of schools so that women can go to school and take care of the children and help with public child care. All of these changes make my future in the work force look more promising because more opportunities are being opened to me as well as other women.

  13. The demand for women in the workplace is higher now because most women will go to college and get degrees because they feel as though thats the only way they'll get job. Also the different thinking methods between men and women will allow for better marketing or even improvement of the products because of the new ideas that both sexes can bring into the company that neither would have thought of before. Men and women both have a responsibility to their families, however, it is more common to see a woman staying home because of the gender stereotypes. Other countries have accomplished having flexible hours for mothers who are also employed, so its not impossible. Also, with the advances in technology a great amount of jobs can be done from the home, which could always be another alternative for working mothers in the future.

  14. Females is the work place means a lot for employers. They get hard, careful workers with college degrees and may possibly get away with paying them less then they would a male employee. For women this is good because employers are now realizing that women are not incompetent and their workplace can exist beyond the kitchen. Business women are handling the home and the work place the same way perhaps a stay at home mom who enjoys her social life too much are. They simple put their child in preschool or hire a nanny or babysitter. More women in the work place will make getting a job more competitive because there are a greater amount of eligible applicants applying for the job.

  15. The demand for female workers is not necessarily due to female skill as much as it is related to the pay. I agree with the idea that companies see women as an easy target of employees because they know they can pay them less. Of course, what company doesn't want to hire cheap employees? Women are becoming more involved in the workplace, and this poses a problem for the household management side of the situation. Women must balance this by hiring nannies and other people to help around the house. They might even resort to having their husbands help out more. Governments are making this easier by providing government day cares and flexible hours that allow women to pick up/drop off their children at school. Overall, the future for women is most certainly improving and it is obvious that by the time I graduate from college, I will be able to land a successful occupation.

  16. It seems apparent that women are being desired more due to their tendency to achieve higher academic degrees. More women are now going to college than they did 20 years ago. In addition, some companies believe that women do not need to be paid as much as men due to the fact that they are not as capable at performing manual labor. Women are faced with great difficulty when they are forced to juggle both work and home. Various goverments are working to ease the burden for women. This includes provide state funded day care centers or providing pay for maternal leave. Coming from the perspective of a male, I will probably not be able to find a quality job after I graduate from college.

  17. Women are wanted in the workplace more now than ever before because they are now more desirable. Women used to have aspirations of marrying rich and making lots of babies to fill up the mansion. That was considered success. Now women are in the workforce throwing their babies to nannies and getting college degrees to compete with the big dogs. A woman of high intelligence and reputation is able to get higher jobs independent of her gender.
As for juggling home and work, many women are slightly incompetent at this; they do not take care of their children or home and don't even cook dinner for their families. Others find a way to balance both responsibilities. So the options to solve the problem is either find a husband who can play stay at home dad, hire maids nannies and chefs, or find a way to manage all womanly duties.
The government doesn't need to do anything about it... I think they have enough on their plates right now, the last thing we need is another women's rights fiasco.
My future is looking pretty good.

  18. women are wanted more and more as the time goes on because there are more woman graduating then men in the united states and also they are ,in the producers eyes, more loyal. i believe that sadly they will receive on average less pay then their male counterparts but it definitely shows the social change that is taking place in today's society.

  19. I can imagine that the demand for female brains is so great because of the cost in comparison to men. They usually work for less pay than men. The article suggests that the government should step up to help women juggle home and work. Government run nurseries are suggested at the expense of the taxpayer to pay for the nurseries. The news means to me very little. The industry i want to enter has very few women in it. As a mater of fact the ubuntu team had recently celebrated when a milestone 5% of members were women. Women may undercut men in other industries thou in the future.

  20. The demand for female workers has increased dramatically since several decades ago when women were stay at home moms or if they did work they were paid below men. More women are now graduating then men are in today's society. Employers also believe that they could pay the women worker less money and the government maybe creating new programs that help women be treated fairly in the workplace.

  21. While this news is, of course, a major watershed for woman's equality, I appreciate that this article does not neglect the growing issues facing working women today. One I believe in particular was left out and should have been included is the growing divorce rate. This article did not feature any statistics on single mothers versus married mothers, but a large number of lower-middle class women are single mother who usually hold two jobs just to make ends meet. The state should focus their attention on these families, as they are at an inherent disadvantage as a one-income family.
