Mitt Romney's statement that 47% or Americans don't pay income tax may be true, but that does not mean they do not pay taxes at all. Only about 18% of Americans pay neither income or payroll taxes, but the majority of these people are the elderly, or low income households that benefit from tax credits. However, there are also some high wealth corporations, including Romney, who find loopholes in the tax code, in order to reduce their tax bills. Overall, Mitt Romney's statement was very misleading, because the majority of Americans contribute their fair share of taxes required by law.
This article states that, although there are 47% of Americans that do not pay the Federal Income Tax, at least half of them pay the payroll tax. And, in addition to this, every American, including those in the 47% pay their fair share in state and local taxes. The article even goes on to mention that, as a percentage of total income, the bottom 20% of taxpayers pay a significantly higher portion of their total income than do any other income bracket. It should be noted, however, that approximately 18% of the "47%" do not pay payroll nor income taxes. Yet the vast majority of individuals that comprise this group are elderly and thus unable to work, or indisposed for work otherwise. It is also important to realize that of Americans making 200,000$+ a year, approximately 35,000 of them pay no income taxes as well, further undermining Mr.Romeny's claim. In all, the taxpayers in this country are comprised of individuals from all income brackets, and thus Romney obviously doesn't do his research before making these absurd claims.
This article highlights the information that Romney blatantly overlooked when discussing why 47% of Americans are simply parasitic victims because they don’t pat income tax. First of all, as the article states, every American pays some sort of tax, whether it is state or local. Second the article brings up the fact about the certain Americans who do not pay either income or payroll taxes, they happen to consist of mostly the elderly, and then made up of households earning less than $20,000. Thirdly, the article illuminates the fact that, the majority of the taxes paid are placed on the middle class. It turns out that many corporations and wealthy men such as Mitt Romney himself pay less on taxes, some 35,000 people making over $200,000 don’t even pay income taxes, than the people in the income groups below them. It’s ironic that Romney called people not paying income taxes freeloaders, seeing as he himself actually pays less in taxes than those 47% due to Congress's inept ability to actually produce something valuable. Instead Congress has produced loop-hole after loop-hole in order to insure that their wallets remain lined with cash, as well as the multi-million dollar corporations that donate company money to Congress.
Romney's statement about 47 percent of Americans not paying income taxes is a misleading idea. Half of this 47 percent pay payroll taxes. In addition, every American pays state and local taxes. However, 18 percent of Americans do not pay federal income taxes nor payroll taxes. 60 percent of these people are the elderly living on limited retirement income. According to an IRS study in 2009, 35,000 Americans making over 200,000 did not pay any money in federal income tax.
This article talks about how Mitt Romney says that 47 percent of Americans do not pay income tax. The article states that every American pays some kind of tax (local, state, payroll, income). Mitt Romney is one of the 35,000 that make at least 200,000 dollars a year and that means that he is paying less on taxes himself. The statement Romney makes might be true but Americans still pay some sort of tax it may not be income tax but they still pay other types of taxes.
High wealthy indiviuals, high profitable corpations, the bottom 20% and the elderly are not paying federal income tax. Even though the bottom 20% aren't paying either payrol nor federal income tax, they pay the highest amount of state taxes compared to every other group. When Romney said 47% of Americans did not specially pay the federal income tax, he himself brought down his own tax.
Romney's concept of 47% of the population not paying income taxes is cryptic to say the least. A large number of this 47% have payroll taxes, in addition to the state and local taxes American citizens pay. 60% of 18% that truly do not pay income/payroll tazes are the elderly who live on retirement, or people too young to pay taxes. Many high income individuals and corporations find ways to avoid or reduce taxes. The idea that 47% of Americans do not pay income taxes is misleading; just because this 47% is not paying income taxes, does not mean they aren't paying some kind of taxes.
The statement made by Romney that 47% of Americans don't pay taxes is extremely misleading. As well as being misleading, it is insulting. Romney presents this data as if 47% of Americans are freeloaders and don't pay any type of tax. This article presents factual data showing that every American pays some sort of tax whether it be state, payroll, or income. The 47% which Romney is referring to are those who cannot work whether because of physical or mental handicap, the youth, and the elderly. Not to mention that half of this 47% still pays payroll tax. The most astonishing part about this article is that studies have shown that people such as Mitt Romney, who make over $200,000 a year pay no income tax!
Jacob Hochman - This article highlights Romney discussing why 47% of Americans are simply parasitic victims because he blatantly overlooked information of why they don’t pay income tax. First of all, as the article states, every American pays some sort of tax, whether it is state or local. Second the article brings up the fact about the mostly the elderly are those certain Americans who do not pay either income or payroll taxes and then made up of households earning less than $20,000. Thirdly, the article illuminates the fact that, the majority of the taxes are placed on middle class citizens. It is also important to realize that of Americans making $200,000+/ a year, approximately 35,000 of them pay no income taxes as well, which further undermines Mr. Romney's claim. The funny part is how hypocritical Romney is being. He is calling out citizens who pay lesser taxes when he himself is a citizen who pays even less in taxes while making $200,000+/per year.
Generally, everyone pays taxes whether it is income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, property tax, etc. His statement about 47% of Americans not paying taxes is very vague because 47% of Americans do not pay the federal income tax. However, half of those people pay payroll taxes. That leaves approximately 18% of Americans that do not pay the federal income tax or the payroll tax. Now, keep in mind, that 18% of Americans that do not pay the income or payroll taxes are the elderly, children, and families who make below $20,000 annually. Romney's statement was very misleading and inaccurate as he failed to lay out the specifics
Every single American pays taxes. Every American pays state and local taxes, income, sales, property, etc. It is true that 47% of Americans don't pay federal taxes. However, only 18% of these people don't pay federal or payroll taxes. Keep in mind, these are elderly who no longer work and live on retirement income or families who make under $20,000 annually who can't afford it. As can be seen, although accurate, Romney's statement is extremely misleading.
Jaime Caldaro--- Every American pays state, local, income, sales, etc. About half of his 47% is the elderly who are on social security, and the other half is the population under 18 in the country. These are also people who make under $20,000 a year. Only 18% of all of them don't pay income of payroll taxes. Mitt Romney's statistics are misleading and inaccurate to economic data.
Romney chose not to speak about how EVERY American pays taxes. He made it seem that these groups of people do not pay taxes in which they do because each American pays state and local taxes, including income, sales, property, etc. This article proves that 53.6% of Americans pay income tax, 28.3% pay payroll tax, and 18% pay neither. Most of them who do not pay either, have a valid reason; such as being elderly or having low income. So where Mitt Romney received his information from, I'm not sure. Maybe next time Romney's statistics will be less misleading and have more background information.
Every american pays their state and local taxes( income, sales, property, etc.) however, 47 percent do not pay their federal taxes. The article states that the bottom 20 percent of taxpayers pay substantially more in state and local taxes as a percentage of their income than any other income group. The article also states that in 2009, over 35,000 americans who made over $200,000 did NOT pay their federal income tax, and some of the wealthiest americans payed a lower tax rate, due to their capital gains income and loopholes they found. Romney's statement was misleading and there is the evidence to prove it.
There are a number of problems with Mitt Romney’s comment on the 47% of Americans who “don’t specifically pay federal income tax.” First off, the article says that every American pays state and local taxes (income, sales, property, etc.) Then, there are 18% of Americans that pay neither payroll nor federal income tax which are those who do not have an income or do not receive a paycheck (elders, children, or those who bring in less than 20,000 a year). The kicker to all of this is the unfairness in the amount of taxes are paid from each class! It turns out that, according to the article, those who earn more than 200,000 a year have lower tax rates or d not have to pay federal income tax at all!
