Vermont Exercising Option to Balance the Budget

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/24/us/24vermont.html. Due 10 May 2013. What reason does the Governor give for NOT balancing the budget in Vermont? Is this a good idea or not??

  1. The Governor of Vermont says that Vermont as a state is unconsciously a frugal state so it has no use for a balanced budget. The Governor claims that they have more common sense than every other state in the United States and they have a tradition of not spending more than they take in. This would mean cutting programs and services for the disabled ,elderly, etc. An independent named Paul N. Poirier says that the Governor should raise taxes on the wealthy instead. I do not think that not balancing the budget in Vermont is bad because it can lead to very bad things like what is happening like the cutting of government services.

  2. The Governor of Virginia claims Virginia has more common sense than the other 49 states. Shumlin also says the state is frugal enough not to require a balanced budget law. Virginia lives within it's own means and hold their firm of not spending more than they take in. I believe a balanced budget needs to be used because without one there can be a big amount of corruption and many other problems within their own state's economy. The state could fall into a deficit and have to take more desperate measures than just cutting programs.

  3. Virginia's governor asserts that Virginia does not need to balance its budget because they "live within [their] means," and do not "[spend] more than [they] take in." This reasoning lends to the belief that if one is responsible with spending, then a balanced budget isn't necessary, a dangerous thought. This isn't a very smart choice, as their idea of cuts include cuts to social programs, which is not auspicious to the welfare state. In all, a balanced budget would make the Virginia legislature better off because it would allow them to make spending cuts to more areas that will have less of a drastic impact on their people.

  4. The governor of Vermont doesn't believe balancing the budget is necessary in Vermont because according to him, they have the most common sense out of any other state and doesn't spend more than they take in. This is bad because that means they will do whatever it takes not to spend more such as cut important programs- a detriment to society. This mentality can only exist for so long before a big collapse. Not balancing a budget prevents progress from being made in Virginia.

  5. Virginia's governor claims Virginia is smarter then the other states. Shumlin also says Virginia is "frugal" I dont know what that means but it sounds bad. Virginia doesnt really look to other states for help. . Virginia is kind of secluded and if they do not seek help they could fall into a deficit and have to do more then cutting programs and closing buisnesses

  6. The governor of Virginia basically implies that his state is smart enough to not balance the budget. I think that not balancing the budget is a good idea. If it worked for them for so long they should just stick to what they always do. The only bad thing is that it affects the rest of the country

  8. The reason the governor gives is that he believes Virginia doesn’t need to balance its budget because Virginians don’t “spend more than they take in.” So, he thinks he doesn’t need to and that Virginia is better off just living within their means. I think this is a bad idea because by not balancing, the legislature has to cut things such as social programs which hurts the people who really rely on and need them to go through life. if they balanced their budget, they would be able to cut programs that aren’t crucial to the public and wouldn’t affect the people that much.

  9. The governor of Vermont makes the assertion that his state does not spend more than it takes in, and does not require the budget to be balanced. He believes that the modest lifestyle of his citizens does not require a balanced budget because they live below their means. This will lead to many cuts to social programs to keep the surplus, which will create a lower standard of living in the long run. Also, the Vermont government will start to lose support from the people that truly need welfare assistance.

I think a balanced budget should be be aimed for because other problems within their own state's economy can rise. The state could fall into a deficit and have to take more desperate measures than just cutting programs.

  13. Virginia's governor states that Virginia has more common sense than the other states. He says they do not need a balanced budget because they do not spend more than it takes in. Without a balanced budget, cuts will be made into social programs and corruption can exist, and there is room for error.

  15. The claim made by the governor of Virginia is that they have no need to balance the budget because they have more sense than all of the other states in the U.S. I do not believe having an unbalanced budget is a good idea If they were to fall into a deficit, many of their sate programs would have to be cut and the residents of the state would suffer in a very horrible way economically.
