How To Live With Climate Change
For grade on 12/3/2010. Discuss at least 3 economic adjustments to be made as the globe contends with an increase in temperature. What will be the most critical issue?? What is the best protection against global warming (according to this article)???

By far the absolute most important economic issue to be addressed is distribution of wealth, or at the very least the support of the poor by the rich. As this article very aptly points out, it was the rich countries (Read: America) that got the human race in to this mess to begin with, so it is only justified that we should be the ones to take the lead in correcting our grave error. Furthermore, it is necessary that the world's leaders abandon petty short term political decisions to keep themselves in office in favor of sweeping changes that could truly revolutionize the way we think about "going green." Finally, consumers and citizens must act now to demand immediate action by both governmental and corporate officials. We can no longer tolerate a lack of environmental responsibility. It is imperative that we introduce major changes, in both the short and long run, to minimize the already dramatic effects of climate change.
ReplyDeletethe most important economic issue to be discussed is the distribution of wealth in order to support the poorer countries. this point is stressed throughout the article because as stated, it is the rich who will have an easier adjustment then the poor. this whole process is an arduous one, but its importance is imperative. and even though the changes will not be evident until much later, it is the most crucial issue on the planet today and our decisions now will have a large impact on the future of society as we know it. the governments have to get involved and collaboration is necessary not just for the sake of the economy but for the sake of the continuum of humanity as we know it.
ReplyDeleteThree suggested economic adjustments to be made with the climate change in order of importance are intense preparation, more development, and wealthy countries helping those still developing. Depending on the place, the specific preparations are different, but if we prepare now we will have a greater chance at surviving when problems like increased flooding and extreme heat waves arrive. The best protection against global warming according to this article is a list of things but generally to be more prepared for adaptation to an occurance we can't keep from hapening.

The wealthier will get healthier and the poorer become worse off with not being able to afford the higher priced foods that come along with the change in climate. The best way to protect this from happening is genetic mutation of seeds, and drought resistant seeds.

Among those adjustments are preparations, developing further, as well as wealthier countries helping those in need. Global warming may be preventable but to be safe we must prepare in case it isn't able to be stopped. We must make sure we can survive and adjust in an emergency climate change.

For example larger, more developed countries should assist struggling countries in environmental fields such as green technology and reducing the chance of increased carbon emissions. Food supply would need to be maximized in case of droughts or prolong winters. Industries such as commercial fishing would also need to take heed of this danger, because climate change can severely affect the equilibrium between ocean temperatures and currents. Disruptions in any of these areas would ensure a possible fall-out in society and its mutual relationship with the planet's resources.

ReplyDeleteThe first economic adjustment would be to have governments assess the risk of population centers from natural disasters like drought and flooding. This is very important in order to minimize losses in the long run in case the prevention effort fails. The second economic adjustment is to allocate government funds to make the grain production more efficient. The idea behind this is that grain costs' much less to produce than meat does in an effort to prevent widespread hunger. The third major economic adjustment would be to quit subsidizing insurance in places with the most risk. This relies mostly on my first contention of assessing risk. If high risk land is expensive much less people will move their thus relieving the cost of relocating people who lose land due to rising ocean levels.

More development in countries, as well as, the wealthier countries helping the poorer countries. This article is asking for changes in distribution of wealth, building infrastructure in countries that are extremely hostile to intervention, and improving government spending on intangible long term food security. When most people can't agree if global warming is even a real phenomenon, the article is asking for government leaders to make huge decisions that involve billions, if not trillions of dollars in the middle of a global financial crisis for protective measures to be instituted. He wants billions of dollars to be spent, building countries in Africa and Asia up to weather a storm that might or might not happen. He then tries to convince us that we have to do this because the rich countries put the world in this mess in the first place. This article is basically fear-mongering and the author is probably part of the Bleeding Heart Society.

For the global warming issue countries should come together and put aside money just in case global warming needs to be dealt with too help the overall being of the world. The richer countries for example like America should help the poorer countries because this would increase the overall economy of the world.
ReplyDeleteThe first issue that needs to be dealt with is the distribution of wealth between the poor and the wealthy. I don't think that it's a good idea for the wealthy to give the poor some of their wealth because then people wouldn't have any incentives to work for anything anymore. The 5% or 6% of the population who are on welfare now will eventually be more than 50% of the population. The second issue is to convince people that global warming is a fact and not a myth. Perhaps that is the most important issue. One way to protect people from global warming is that the richer countries should help the poorer countries by sharing some of their supplies. Another way would be to develop drought resistant seeds to ensure that there would be enough food for everybody.

The last one is where distribution of wealth comes in, people need to be able to by food, but the food that is grown in ways best for the environment tends to be the most expensive.

ReplyDeleteThe unequal distribution of wealth among nations is a critical issue, and it becomes even more so as the global temperature rises quite drastically. Because it is the rich that got us into this mess, it is only fair that they be the ones to pull us out. Besides pointing blame, this the rich should probably do it just because the poor are incapable of doing so. Another important issue to consider is that of genetically modified foods. With the changing temperatures, a lot of crops won't make it. To reduce the risk of losing mass amounts of crops in such hard times, it is important that we modify the crops so we can be certain they won't die on us.
