Costco Tops List Of Best Companies For High School Grads

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/05/costco-career-opportunities-best_n_5766668.html. DUE 15 September 2015. Why are these companies being chosen as "best" companies for whom to work? Which company would you choose to work for assuming you did not have a HS diploma? Why?

36 comments:

  1. These companies were chosen as the "best" companies to work for because they treat their workers well and generally pay higher than minimum wage. For example the pay is much higher than Wal-Mart and Sam's club. Also they offer company-sponsored health club. These conditions usually influences there employees to stick around and Costco, for example, has less than 6 percent annual employee turnover rate.

If I did not have a High School Diploma, I would work for Costco or Publix. Because these stores are well known for treating their employees with care which is important if you want to have employees that love their job also they have great pay that I know some people make a lot of their living from working at these well known companies.

  2. These companies were chosen as the "best" companies to work for because they pay higher than minimum wage and treat the employees well. Costco has the reputation of promoting from within. Over 70% of the warehouse managers started out on the floor. Most other companies will hire outside grads with MBAs to be managers. Publix is also known for giving their employees shares of the company. This leads to better and friendlier service. Another reason why Costco considered the "best" is because they offer health care to their employees. That shows that they care about their employees and costumers, not just profit.

If I did not have a high school diploma (which I definitely will have), I would want to work for Apple or Publix. It is important to me to work for a company that I like and I use their products. I never go to Costco so even though they are ranked number 1, I would not want to work for them. I am surprised that Apple is on this list because I thought they only hired graduates. I would love to represent Apple and work for them.

  3. The companies that were choses "best" companies to work for, were chosen because they seem to hire from within the company instead of finding some one from the out side. It stated that 70% of warehouse managers started on the floor, meaning that they did not hire some one with a degree they just found a worth employee to fill that position. I assume that the other companies on this list are similar in that way as well. if i did not graduate, i would like 2 work for Costco seeing that is rated the highest, or apple because you know... who does not want to work for apple?

  4. These companies were chosen as the “best” because of the way that they treat their employees and what they offer to them. Within Costco the employees are paid well above minimum wage and they are also given health care through the company. Many of the people that are now warehouse managers in Costco’s started off working at the register, through hard work the employees can work their way up to better positions within the job. If I were unable to (God forbid) get a high school diploma then I would like to have a job at Costco, Whole Foods, or Publix. In all of these stores you can work your way up to higher positions, own shares of the stores stock, and really I’d just like to work in a supermarket.

  5. These companies are being chosen as the "best" companies to work for because they treat their employees much better than a standard place would by giving them promotions to higher paying jobs regardless of degree or certification. They idolize seniority more than certification. They also pay higher than minimum wage of industry peers such as Wal-Mart or Sam's Club. Employees also get company-sponsored health care which gives employees a reason to stay and work there for years as proven by their low turnover rate.

If i didn't have a HS diploma i would choose to work at Costco's because they are rated the number 1 company to work for. I would like the idea of being able to work your way to the top, and that is exactly what i would set out to do.

  6. These companies are being chosen as the “best” companies to work for because they treat their workers well and they pay well over the minimum wage. Costco’s CEO, Craig Jelinek, has been known to speak out about raising the national minimum wage meaning that the company actually cares about how much their employees are getting paid. Whole Foods also provides their employees with great health benefits such as medical plans and life insurance. Whole Foods has also, according to their employees, “great benefits and strives to grow their team members”. (Glassdoor.com)

If I did not have a high school diploma, my primary place of work would be Whole Foods. I would like to work for Publix or Costco but the only problem is that I tend to shop more at Whole Foods and I feel more comfortable being there. The overall atmosphere of this supermarket is more welcoming with a well designed store and the placement of all sorts of fresh and organic products throughout the building. After reading reviews by the employees I would like to work in a place where everyone is friendly and always willing to help.

  7. These companies were chosen as the "best" companies to work for because of the way they treat their workers and the well above average pay. Costco, for example, provides their employees benefits such as health insurance and opportunities for growth. Due to these incentives a happy workforce is generated which in turn increases productivity. Assuming I did not have a high school diploma, I would probably work for Costco or Publix. Costco offers enticing benefits that I would enjoy and I am quite familiar with the environment at Publix as I have been grocery shopping there for over a decade.

  8. These companies are being chosen as the best companies to be working for because they treat its workers well and providing room to grow within the company. Employees have company-sponsored health care and pay is much higher than industry peers like Wal-Mart owned Sam's Club.
If i didn't have a High school Diploma, i would choose to work at Costco or Publix, I would like the idea of receiving benefits, In all of these stores you can work your way up to higher positions, own shares of the stores stock. Plus Supermarket jobs sound fun.

  9. These companies were chosen as the "best" companies to work for because they treat their workers well and generally pay higher than minimum wage. Over 70% of the warehouse managers started out on the floor. Most other companies will hire outside grads with MBAs as their managers. Employees also get company-sponsored health care which gives employees a reason to stay. This is evident by companies low turnover rate.

If I did not have a high school diploma, I would probably choose to work for Apple merely because of my interest in technology. However, I would rather invest my time in practicing my musical talents and go into the music industry.

  10. The companies that were surveyed were chosen as the “best” companies for people whose highest level of education was high school because they tend to treat their workers well, pay above the minimum wage in most cases, and have company sponsored healthcare compared to other industry companies such as Wal-Mart. Costco, being a fine example with all of these incentives has shown that its reputation of being ranked #1 is no lie. Especially with the annual employee turnover rate that is less than 6 percent and how more than 70 percent of Costco’s warehouse managers started their career from working the floor or register.

If I did not receive a High School Diploma, I would want to work for either Costco or Apple because based on the article and their high ratings, it would be the most beneficial for me to work in either of these companies with my main interest in technology and the benefits laid out. Again, Costco has a reputation for treating their employees well, pay that is well over minimum wage, and having a company sponsored health care. These are the benefits that I would want to seek out if I decided to work at a large company like Costco, however, I would pursue a job in Apple if possible because of my interest in technology and Apple products.

  11. These companies were chosen as the "best" companies to work for based on a survey on a career website called Glassdoor. To ensure a reasonable conclusion, Glassdoor only looked at the companies with at least 40 reviews on their website. Many small businesses may offer better conditions for a worker that did not receive a high school diploma but this list only considers the larger businesses. These businesses received good reviews on Glassdoor because of higher than minimum pay wage, opportunities for career advancement inside the company, and even offering health insurance to employees.

If I did not receive a high school diploma, I would want to work Costco. Costco's employee turnover rate us extremely low for such a big company so I would feel like I have some job stability. Nine out of ten Costco employees receive health insurance and I would want my job to include that if possible. I would not be happy working at a cash register my entire life so Costco offers me the best opportunity to work my way up to a job that I would be happy to do.

  12. The companies chosen for the best to work for were chosen based on their employee benefits as well as upward mobility. Companies like Costco give their employees benefits like healthcare and pay above the minimum wage, which many competitors do not do. This results in a low turnover rate, and more experienced employees staying.

without a high school diploma, i would most want to work for Wells Fargo. I could become either a collector and collect overdue payments, or end up a bank teller. While both do not have high pay, the benefits Wells Fargo gives is great. If i went back to school and graduated, they have a scholarship for employees going to college, in addition they have scholarships for children if i have any.

  13. These companies are on this list due to their numerous employee benefits such as high wages, health insurance, and opportunities for career advancements. Due to these benefits, these companies have high employee satisfaction and low turnover rates. If I didn't have a high school diploma, I would pursue a career at Costco. Costco pays above minimum wage and provides health insurance for most of its employees. Costco also prefers to hire internally rather than externally, which is why most managers were once warehouse floor workers, thus this provides me with the opportunity for career advancement.

  14. These companies were chosen because of their generous employee benefits. They generally pay higher than many other companies, such as walmart, as well as giving benefits such as health insurance. If I chose to forego my high school diploma, I would choose to work at starbucks because they offer all of the great benefits such as health and dental insurance and above-minimum wages. But they also pay for employees college, provided they work there for at least 3 months. That way if I chose to do something else with my life, I could get my GED and go to college without worrying about how I would pay for it.

  15. These companies were chosen as the "best" companies to work for because of reviews for the companies left on glassdoor.com. They were rated so high due to higher pay, the treatment of employees and the fact that they provided healthcare to their employees.Only company with at least 40 reviews on the glassdoor website were consider which could mean that there are other companies that are as good as those listed who did not make the list due to lack of glassdoor.com reviews.

If I did not have a high school diploma, I would probably choose to work at costco, whole foods or starbucks. Costco offers job stability and growth potential which would make it a good place to work. Though I would also consider whole foods or starbucks due to their work environment and higher-quality goods. All three seem like good picks for employers.

  16. All these companies share some similar characteristics. They all pay above minimum wage and they all give their employees services and the ability to move up in the chain of command of the company. We see these companies here because these are companies in which the costumers are happy to work there, regardless of the fact that they do not have a high school diploma. Of the companies there, I would probably work for Apple, mostly because I am a fan of their products and I have a passion for technology.

  17. The jobs are all being listed as the best for employees with no education or experience past high school. The main reasoning behind their availability to varying experiences in the work field is because they are all large corporations and have multiple sectors and a mix of low- and high-wage jobs based on experience or education. The article mentions that it is important to remember that the source of the data is also partial to bigger businesses that have employees who would post about their experiences and satisfaction. They are probably seen as “best” because their employees are fared well and provided with health care from within the corporation.
If I were faced in a situation where I did not have a high school diploma, I would aim to work in a business along to lines of Wells Fargo or Apple. These companies would provide me with plenty of opportunities for advancement within the corporation and chances to work on things that I find interesting and significant to everyday lives.

  18. All of the companies listed were there as the "best" for employees with no education outside of their high school career for a plethora of reasons. One reason being, they pay higher than the plain minimum wage, as their counter companies such as Wal - Mart and Sam's Club, etc.., do. Another reason being they actually care about their employees. Not to throw shade at the other big corporations but in comparison employees at the companies that were listed say they are treated way better in their job. Another reason of why the jobs were listed as the "best" were because they provide health care for their employees. Health care provision is very beneficial for the employees for way too many reasons to be listed.

If I didn't receive my high school diploma, I would work for Publix or Apple. I would choose those jobs because they seem the most "tolerable" to work at everyday and they also have plenty of opportunities for me to move up in the social stratification of the business. So I could possibly achieve a managerial position which is a thousand times better than sitting behind a register for my whole life.

  19. These companies are considered to be the best to work for if you did not go to collage for many reasons. First, all the companies on the first pay a living age. The companies also provide heath benefits so their employees don't get put into debt like so many others from the high cost of healthcare, unlike Walmart who only has part-time employees so they don't have to pay for things like insurance. The companies on the list also have their employees move up through the company and they might even pay for college education. If I had to work for one of the companies on the list I would choose Publix because I know people who work at Publix that have moved up to be managers very quickly.

  20. These companies were chosen as the best places to work if someone only had a high school diploma because they pay well and allow for upward mobility. The starting salary is well above minimum wage and most of the company's managers started out as cashiers. The workers also reported fair treatment. I wouldn't want to work for any of these companies but if I had to choose I would obviously pick Costco because they ranked the highest in this survey. I would enjoy a decent salary and medical care benefits. I would also have room to grow and hopefully obtain a promotion.
I find it perplexing why the executives would operate their business in this fashion. It seems counter-productive because paying the workers more will only pass on greater costs to the consumer which would then reduce business.

  21. This article’s main focus is on Costco and the large amount of benefits it brings to its employees. Costco treats it employees well by providing them with company-sponsored healthcare as well as a minimum wage that is much higher than its competitors such as Walmart. Most of the employees working for Costco are content with their jobs which show in the turnover rate of less than 6%. Overall, the ten companies listed in this article are all high-quality career choices for people who chose not to go on to college.

  22. With only a high school diploma, my options for employment would be limited to unskilled labor: cashier or bagger. But, with Costco’s (and other business’s) focus on the person and not the commodity comes the “dream job” for those with little left. By creating a job health care system that is in itself a generous endowment for those used to the poor so-called livable wage of Walmart employees, people are less likely to leave the company and may even climb the ranks to manager. This is unlike the major corporate businesses who would rather higher MBA undergrads than those already withing the company, since those stores are less personal with their customers/employees.

If I had the choice between any of these top companies, I would be between Starbucks and Costco. For the sake of college, Starbucks offers its employees the ability to go to college for free from respective universities they associate with. This would give me the upper hand to improving my shots at a degree putting me above the livable standard. If college is out of the question, I would choose Costco, since it’s minimum wage is far above the poor wages of Walmart employees, with health benefits and closeness within the company. I would be treated as a human, not a machine.

  23. These companies are ranked the best to work for because not only do they pay in most cases higher than minimum wage they also provide different benefits. If not all most of the top ten provides have most of their employees with company sponsored Medicare. the most important point I think is the ability to move up in ranks and see this upward motion on a regular basis. If I were to choose which company I would want to work for it would have to be Public because not only do they provide all these benefits but I. An also be a shareholder. I do see the benefit in provide these benefits because back in the day before unions employees were treated badly and not given benefits then this one guy gave benefits to his employees and you saw production go up, when employees are treated well.

  24. By earning a secondary school diploma, these few years show little to improve one’s chances at a higher than minimum wage. It seems as if employees could only make due with working at the local McDonald’s or Walmart, both of which do not extend livable earnings. But with Costco, Whole Foods, and Starbucks, the illusory belief that corporations will exploit those without college education is put to rest, as these and many other companies extend health care benefits and actually livable wages. Even Starbucks allows its workers to go to certain colleges for free while paying them close to twice as much as the national minimum wage.
Given the choice without college education, I would work at Starbucks, simply because of the high minimum wage and the college benefits. I have a chance at making myself successful by not being grounded and trapped by the Walmart “employee-commodity” system. Because places like Costco choose to treat their employees as real people, not just the trades in which they consume business; rather, business flourishes with respect to both consumer and worker. Both treated equally, the demand increases, and so does the production – an echo of our previous dabble into supply and demand.

  25. High pay, good conditions, and admirable development room creates opportunities for individuals that have not attended college. The list of companies that are the "best" to work at for high school grads that have not yet attended or do not plan on attending college, all have incentives. These incentives which include higher than normal wages, health care, and maybe stock options are normally available to college graduates but to a person that is not a graduate this a phenomenon. The amount of benefits for the amount of knowledge needed is incredible and may be damn right commendable. Companies that i would choose to work with would be a company that works with my schedule. Places like subway and publix usually take into account that high school students have school and work around the school schedule. It is imperative that the job does not impact school because in tomorrow's world education defines who you are and everything you will be. In tomorrows world a life without education in most cases is a life condemned to poverty.

  26. These companies are being chosen as the best companies to work for because they not only pay well above the minimum wage federally and state required they also provide numerous benefits such as healthcare. These companies also do not require you to be a high school graduate and give you the opportunity to grow in the company. For example, Costco often opts for internal hires rather than MBA grads from the outside world as stated in the article. If I had the choice to work for a company off of the list I'd probably choose Nordstrom since I love clothing and I'd be able to get discounts on brands I love like Alexander Wang and Rick Owens.

  27. These companies are chosen as the “best” to work for due to the various benefits these employers provide. In today’s society, there is a preference for people with bachelors and masters degrees. Yet finding a way to provide for oneself while pursuing a greater education may prove to be difficult. Most companies are not willing to hire a high-school graduate, let alone provide them with benefits. So it is reassuring to know that there are those who will provide a higher minimum wage, medical plans, and discounts on merchandise.
If given the opportunity to work at a company I would love to work at Nordstrom. Knowing that they provide a medical coverage complete with an employee retirement plan makes me feel at ease. Also, I could have the opportunity to get employee discounts on expensive brands I love such as Jimmy Choo and Alexander McQueen.

  28. These companies were chosen as the "best" companies to work for because they treat their workers well and generally pay higher than minimum wage. Over 70% of the warehouse managers started out on the floor at entry level positions. Many other companies will hire outside grads with their MBA as their managers. Employees also benefit from company-sponsored health care which gives employees an extra incentive to stay.
If I did not have a high school diploma, I would work at Chipotle due to prior experience as an employee. There were many benefits that they provided for. This may include health insurance if needed, as well as help for a higher education in further aspirations. Everyone starts in an entry level position, but it's easy for anyone to work up the ranks to service manager, general manager, and even higher. There's opportunity for everyone to be successful and have a great livelihood.

  29. These companies were all chosen to be the best because of what they represent. They place their customers, employees and community first. When you treat your employees like people, giving them more than minimum wage, and provide healthcare, they actually will enjoy their job while trying to advance their life and spend cash to help the economy. Their ability to advance to higher positions gives them motivation to work harder and always do their best for a promotion. Costco is very genius in this method because and provides and great environment with driven people to work.
I would most definitely choose Costco because of their reputation of treating their employees and costumers how they should be treated. I would also be an employee that would be driven to move up with promotions for even better benefits.

  30. These are the best companies for those with only or without a HS diploma because they get paid higher than another store would give, they usually have good benefits from working for these companies, such as healthcare, and there are many opportunities for advancement considering if the work is put into it. It is overall the better choice to work for these companies than to work for a minimum wage dead end job. If these companies were my only options, I would choose to work at Costco because of its familiarity and because of the possible eventual opportunity for advancement.

  31. These companies are listed as the "best" companies to work at for high school graduates because they offer many benefits towards the worker that other jobs may not. Places like Costco and Starbucks offer their workers healthcare which saves the employee money and makes them more eager to work. They also get paid more than minimum wage and are treated better than dirt, unlike Wal-mart employees. By treating your employees like humans, paying them better and giving them healthcare, it provides a better working environment, which causes the employees to enjoy working and to be eager to come back. Additionally, 70% of warehouse managers started from the floor which would give me a boost to work my way up the chain of command, so there would also be benefits of staying with the company for a long period of time.

If I were to get a job straight out of highschool, I would want to work at starbucks solely because I could work my way up the chain of command and end up as a manager rather than stay a cashier my whole life. Also Starbucks allows its workers to go to college for free, depending on the university, so with this, I could eventually go to college in hopes of getting my masters in criminology and once again work my way up until I could be an FBI agent. I feel as though Starbucks would offer me the best chance to getting there.

  32. These companies are considered the "best" due to what they offer their employees. Some companies such as Costco and Starbucks offer their employers health care and college tuition but towards a specific colleges of the company's choice. The "best" companies tend to also have a higher pay for their employers such as people who work for Wal-Mart and other large corporations.
The "best" companies are giving more incentives than just pay unlike other smaller companies.

A company that I would particularly work for if I did not receive a HS diploma would be Costco due to the healthcare that is provided for the employers with their annual pay. Costco also provides a variety of goods that consumers tend to want which is why Costco is considered #1 in my opinion.

  33. Knowing that i don't have to go to college and still get a job would fit in my career plans as a "last resort". Also let it be a know fact that Walmart had approximately 160,000 to 200,000 people who were forced to work off-the-clock, were denied overtime pay, or were not allowed to take rest and lunch breaks. Knowing this fact, of course Costco is going to be number one on the list for "Career opportunities" reviews by employees. If you want to get liked by the people and receive more workers and get more reviews and attain factors that will only help your business grow, then give the people what they want!

If i am not making it "big" in pro baseball or inheriting a million dollars from someone, then my best bet would probably be Costco. Given the fact that i am not in college and my parents are fed up with me being in the house all day, i need a job where i can get a higher stipend to get a place to stay in for the time being.
