Rescuing Greece: Beyond the Edge

Due 24 Feb 2012. What solutions would you recommend to solve the euro problem? Is kicking Greece "out of the Euro Zone" the salvation of the other Euro countries? Do other Euro countries have the "right" to persuade Greece to change their policies?

  1. The Euro problem is partly due to the lack of co-ordinated fiscal policy and the lack of competition among banks. Greece is in such a big trouble because they do not enforce tax collection strict enough to gain enough revenue to run the country. People should not have to opportunity to choose whether they will pay tax or not. Since they are enjoying the benefits provided by the country, they should all have the duty to pay taxes. I don't think kicking Greece out of the Euro zone would help at all! If the economic problems could not be solved or at least improved, they are very likely to be "transferred" to another countries, most likely the European countries. Helping Greece out will eventually benefit their own country. European countries have the right to persuade Greece to change their policies, especially their tax policy, as the fellow members in the European Union.

  2. A recommendation for a solution to solve the Euro Problem is to develop more efficient methods of generating revenue. Greece's government fails at ensuring that the citizens are actually paying their taxes. I think kicking Greece out of the Euro Zone may seem somewhat malicious; however, it is a good idea. If they were kicked out it would send a message to other Euro countries that any actions similar to that of Greece would not be tolerated. This would ensure that other countries don't fail to enforce taxation. All members of the European Union have a right to persuade other countries to change their policies because the failure of one country affects another thus it is important to take into consideration the ideas of policies that other Euro nations have.

  3. Oooh Greece… what shall Europe do with you. To solve the euro problem, I would agree with Feyaad and Xiaowen that Greece should enforce their people to pay taxes. Majority of successful countries run off of their people’s taxes and as of right now Greece is not doing so well. I do not think kicking Greece out of the Euro Zone will solve anything, but just make matters worse. If Greece is struggling right now, how could the country still support itself with NO help at all. I think that the Euro Zone needs to make a deal with Greece; either enforce taxes and they will assist in restoring the country or decline the offer and Greece will fall head first into a hole and suffer. Greece needs to understand they can not get out of their problems alone. Other countries do have the right to persuade Greece. If Greece falls, the other European countries are looked down upon for not stepping in. If the Euro Zone works together with Greece and Greece and compromise with the Zone, I believe Greece can get back on their feet again.

  4. Since Greece's economy is down , I agree that they should raise taxes since it will help the government earn more money and stimulate there economy. Many countries who are better off than Greece have higher taxes. I think if Greece was to get kicked out of the Euro Zone, then it would cause more problems between within Europe and Greece. I think that the other European countries should be able to try and persuade their policies. Since Greece and the other countries are like states in America, it means that what one country does affects the other country.

  5. The euro problem can be solved by finding a way of raising funds by taxing the people more. Greece, specifically, has faced immense problems with their ineffective tax system. I don't think that kicking Greece out will completely solve the problem as many other European countries are in major debt. I think that there definitely needs to be an intervention by the other European countries and Greece. Greece is out of control in spending and is a large part of the financial crisis Europe is currently facing. Greece's financial success not only affects the Greek government and people but more important every individual on the continent.

  6. Greece needs to raise taxes and have it actually be manditory to pay them, plain and simple. They need to come up with a more efficient way of raising money. As mean as it seems, kicking Greece out of the Euro Zone will serve as a message to other countries as well as prevent Greece from taking down the other countries in its free fall. I think the other countries have the right to persuade Greece to change their policies because they are trying to help Greece and it should take their advice.

  7. I think the only way to really solve the problem would be to generate more revenue by raising taxes. Kicking out Greece seems to be the salvation to the other countries because it would help them out in the long run by making sure that the other countries stay in line and follow certain policies that they need to help their economy. Other countries can persuade Greece because it's economy is effecting their own and they need to do what would help them.

  8. Sucks to suck. They're in a tough situation out there. It's hard to think about in this day and age, but the people of Greece are just gonna have to tough it up and endure some hard times up ahead. It would appear that in any scenario, tougher living conditions are on the horizon for the people of Greece. As far as a 'solution' goes, the obvious thing to do is to decrease benefits for citizens, and increase revenue, which means enforcing taxation of citizens.

While other countries may be getting screwed, they have no right in forcing Greece to change its domestic policies. But, in any case, Greece has to shape up, because if they don't, people won't get their money, people will get frustrated, and when frustrated people want money, wars happen. So, while other countries have no business in Greece's domestic affairs, it's still in the best interest of Greece to shape up.

Maybe this is the beginning of the end of the world. We could only be so lucky.

  9. Greece has definitely encountered a situation that requires a lot of discipline and perseverance in need of focus on gaining revenue in ways that could hurt the people but could save them in the end. Greece has slacked in collecting taxes which is basically the only solution to their problem. Kicking Greece out could definitely be a salvation to the other countries, seeing as Greece has slithered their way into avoiding their debt. However, I do not think it will solve the country's problem. If Greece falls, you can bet that everyone else will too. The countries depend on each other to lift the country into prosperity, and I do feel as if the other Euro countries have a responsibility to help out Greece - but it can only go so far. If Greece does not compromise and meet them half way, there's nothing else they can do.

  10. I believe that taxes definitely need to be raised in order to make up for the economic problems of Greece. Kicking Greece out of the Euro zone, though, seems a bit extreme, since it would not only mess them up, but the whole world as well. If Greece continues to avoid compromise, however, drastic measures will have to be taken in order to ensure that they stop dodging their debt payments. The other European countries should aid Greece, but then the issue of foreign aid arises. All in all, I think that Greece just needs to step up and pay its taxes.
